User Review: M4U 2 Headphones - The most perfect sound you will ever hear in a portable headphone

April 14, 2012

Products: M4U 2 Headphones

I had the privilege to hear the PSB M4U 2's in a local retailer that offers a wide selection of mid range and high end headphones. I consider myself to be an audio enthusiast who enjoys an eclectic range of genres from soft rock to hip hop; from the 60's to present day. I have been searching for a headphone that could provide stellar reproduction across all genres. I thought this was an insurmountable task, having tried headphones with punchy, deep bass but with muddy mids and highs, or cans with clean and accurate mids and highs, but anemic bass. As I anticipated trying these on for the first time, my first impression was the solid quality of the build, particularly at the fold of the headphones which appears to be significantly more durable than other folding headphones on the market. As I placed over my ears, the fit was just right with an excellent seal around the ears- tight enough for light exercise like walking. I really liked that there was an amplification switch with a separate option for noise cancelling. Most other headphones offer these as a "package deal" working in tandem. With separate amplification, I can enjoy the added sonic punch without the negative sonic impact of noise cancelling circuitry when it's not needed. I also like that there is a low battery light as the current cans I plan to replace with these simply die without warning. On to the sound.......while ideal headphone sound is subjective and you don't know me from anyone, I rarely write reviews and was compelled by the goose bump-generating sound from these headphones. If sonic perfection exists in a portable headphone, it is here in the M4U 2. For about the same investment as rapper cans (which admittedly, I foolishly made several months ago), I can assure you that you will unleash your music collection and feel like you are hearing many songs in your collection for the first time. I was under the impression that the lack of clarity and dynamics through my I phone was due to the compression of MP3 files. There is a clarity and spaciousness I have never experienced. Mids and highs are natural and transparent; lows are deep and full with plenty of punch when called for without being overpowering. I am saving up for my pair to purchase as soon as possible. If you are in the market for headphones in the $400 range, there isn't even a close second option. Get these!
