User Review: M4U 2 Headphones - "Best-sounding Headphones I've Tried in a Long Time."

Products: M4U 2 Headphones

“I used the PSB M4U 2 headphones on a plane flight to test their noise-canceling capabilities and sound quality compared with the Bose QuietComfort 15 over-the-ear noise-canceling headphones I normally use when traveling. I noticed right away that the PSB headphones are heavier and much more solidly built than the Bose. I always treat the Bose very carefully because the plastic parts feel like they could break quite easily, as they did on my previous Bose QC2 headphones. The PSB is much sturdier and should be able to stand up to more abuse.

While the noise-canceling of the M4U 2 was not as effective as the QC15, the sound quality of the PSB headphones was clearly superior using my iPhone 4S as a source. Everything from big band to symphonic music and even my own recordings of avant-garde world music and my wife's original songs in various styles sounded richer, fuller, more open, and truer to the original (at least with the recordings I made) than with the Bose. I was especially pleased with the PSB's clean, clear rendition of female vocals, high-pitched flutes and cymbals, and deep bass from low drums and synthesizers.

Even better, you can still hear audio from the M4U 2 without power—say, if the battery dies—though you don't get any noise canceling or amplification in that case. By contrast, you hear nothing from the Bose if you don't turn on the power or the battery goes south. Overall, I love the sound quality of the PSB M4U 2 headphones—in fact, they are among the best-sounding headphones I've tried in a long time. Paul Barton's reputation as a superb speaker designer now extends into the world of personal audio, and I consider his first foray into that world to be a real triumph."
